Right now, when your panels make more power than your house is using, the surplus flows to the grid. Florida treats you fairly well today: under the state’s net metering rule, utilities like FPL, Duke, and TECO credit those exports against your bill at the full retail rate.
But there are two catches. First, any surplus still sitting on your account at the annual true-up gets paid out at the utility’s avoided-cost rate, a fraction of retail, so if your system consistently overproduces, you’re already selling that extra power cheap.
